GW PAL (Personal Alarm Locator)
The GW Office of Safety and Security and Division of Information Technology are proud to introduce a new mobile safety application for our University called GW PAL, or Personal Alarm Locator. When installed and opened on either your iOS or Android smartphone, this app acts as a mobile silent alarm. When first installing the app, be sure to fill out your user profile, where you may include your name, an emergency contact and other pertinent information for emergency responders, such as current residence or health information.
After pressing the “Arm” button to ready the app, press the "Help" button during any emergency on campus, and you can quickly communicate to the GW Police Department your phone number, GPS location and a short text message. If you are outside of the Foggy Bottom or Mount Vernon Campuses, or if you are on the Virginia Science and Technology Campus, when alerting, the app will prompt you to dial 911 for emergency assistance and the alert will NOT reach GWPD. **The only time information is sent to GWPD is after you click the "Help" button and after you submit a tip. "Arming" the application does not send any alerts.
Users will also be able to send crime tips via GW PAL, along with photos or videos if desired. Tips can be sent from any location on or off campus. Other features include a shortcut to your smartphone flashlight, and a quick dial list for local taxi companies.
The Office of Safety and Security encourages all community members, including students, faculty and staff to download this app on their iOS or Android smartphones. Additional directions for usage are located here.
Note: Below is a screenshot of the Android version of the app. The locations of buttons vary slightly in the iOS version.
